How to Talk to Your Parents About Assisted Living During the Holidays

Nov 2, 2026 | Assisted Living, Featured

The holidays often bring families together in a way that doesn’t happen the rest of the year.

For many families, it’s the first time in months they’ve spent several days together under one roof. And sometimes, those visits reveal changes that weren’t obvious during weekly phone calls.

Your mom seems more tired than usual. Or your dad is having trouble keeping up with household chores. You notice unopened mail, expired food in the refrigerator, missed medications, or difficulty getting around the house.

It’s natural to wonder whether now is the time to talk about assisted living.

The conversation may feel uncomfortable, but approaching it with empathy and preparation can make it far more productive (and far less stressful) for everyone involved.

Don’t Make It a Surprise

Few people respond well to feeling ambushed, especially when the topic is something as personal as where they live.

Rather than bringing up assisted living in the middle of a holiday dinner or family gathering, find a quiet moment when you can talk privately without interruptions.

If possible, let your parent know ahead of time that you’d like to have an important conversation so they don’t feel caught off guard.

Start With What You’ve Observed

Sticking to facts rather than assumptions helps keep the conversation focused on concerns instead of criticism. Instead of telling your parent what you think they should do, begin by sharing specific observations. For example:

  • “I’ve noticed you’ve mentioned falling a couple of times this year.”
  • “You told me grocery shopping has become exhausting.”
  • “I saw that managing your medications has been more difficult lately.”

Listen More Than You Talk

It can be tempting to arrive with a solution already in mind. Instead, ask open-ended questions and give your parent space to answer honestly.

You might ask:

  • How have you been feeling lately?
  • What’s becoming harder than it used to be?
  • Are there things around the house you wish were easier?
  • What would make daily life less stressful?

Sometimes parents have already been thinking about making a change. They simply haven’t known how to start the conversation themselves.

Focus on Goals, Not Losses

Assisted living isn’t about taking independence away. For many older adults, it helps preserve it by removing the challenges that have become difficult to manage alone.

But many people hear the words “assisted living” and immediately think about giving something up. Try reframing the discussion around what your parent hopes to gain. Instead of focusing on the house they’re leaving behind, talk about:

  • More time for hobbies
  • Fewer household responsibilities
  • Opportunities to socialize
  • Help with daily tasks
  • Greater peace of mind
  • More independence through the right level of support

Expect More Than One Conversation

It’s unlikely that one discussion will end with a decision. In many families, the first conversation simply opens the door.

Your parent may need time to think, ask questions, or process their emotions before they’re ready to consider next steps. And that’s okay. Approach the discussion as an ongoing conversation rather than a single event.

Include Them in Every Decision

One of the biggest mistakes families make is deciding for a parent instead of *with* them. Whenever possible, involve your loved one in every step of the process.

Visit communities together. Ask what matters most to them. Discuss apartment layouts, activities, dining options, and services. Having choices helps people feel more confident and in control during a major life transition.

Remember That Emotions Are Normal

Even when assisted living is clearly the right choice, it’s normal for everyone to experience mixed emotions. Your parent may feel sadness, fear, relief, uncertainty…or all of those at once.

And you may experience guilt, worry, or concern about saying the wrong thing.

Try not to argue with emotions or rush past them. Acknowledging that this is a difficult conversation often makes it easier to move forward together.

End With an Invitation, Not an Ultimatum

Unless there’s an immediate safety concern, the goal isn’t to force a decision during the holidays. Instead, end the conversation with a simple next step, which often leads to better decisions than high-pressure deadlines.

That might mean scheduling a tour, gathering information, or agreeing to continue talking after everyone has had time to reflect.

A Conversation That Comes From Love

Talking about assisted living isn’t always easy, but avoiding the conversation rarely makes concerns disappear.

When approached with patience, respect, and compassion, the holidays can provide a meaningful opportunity to begin planning for the future together.

If your family is beginning to explore assisted living, Priority Life Care is here to help. Contact us to schedule a tour, ask questions, and learn how assisted living can support independence, safety, and a fulfilling lifestyle for the people you love.

For families gathering in Jensen Beach, Florida, a conversation about senior living can begin with the pleasures your parents value along the Treasure Coast. Time at Indian Riverside Park or browsing Treasure Coast Square may be part of their favorite family routines. Discussing Celebration Villa of Jensen Beach with those Martin County connections in mind can help your parents picture possibilities while keeping their own priorities central.

My mother transitioned to assisted living two years ago, and within the past year, the memory care unit. I am so very grateful for the loving and attentive staff. Memory care is not easy, nor is it perfect. They have consistent staff members which says a lot about the management and the facility. I wish I could remember all their names, but specifically Dulce, Daisie, Urbain, Pam, Cheila, Shawntel, Lilly - and so many others, that provide loving care to the memory care residents. They arrange for so many activities - visit their Facebook page to catch a glimpse. The front desk staff at the front door are always friendly and helpful, too! I have peace of mind knowing my mother is in very good hands.
